SOS Children's Villages Association of South Africa
|

In 1996, former President Nelson Mandela said, "children are not ours to be used and abused, but to be loved and nurtured. Their well-being is ultimately the well-being of an entire nation." Thousands of children are abandoned annually in South Africa, a frightening realisation when considering that children are the future and societal wellbeing depends on the strength and cohesion of family. Since 2006 the number of babies abandoned in hospitals and public places has doubled, and it has been estimated that by 2010, orphans will constitute between nine and 12% of the South African population.
For the past 25-years, The SOS Children's Villages Association of South Africa, a non-profit organisation and the largest private children's welfare organisation in the world, has been taking action for children.
SOS Children's Villages raises orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children and caters for all races and religions nationally. Through the establishment of villages, which is headed by a Village Director, and assisted by SOS Housemothers, the organisation is able to build families for children in need who have come through the courts as a result of abuse, neglect, abandonment or an inability of parents to care for their children.
SOS has a vision that every child must belong to a family and grows with love, respect and security. By having an SOS mother-headed household each mother has the opportunity to forge a close relationship with every child entrusted to her, and provides the security, love and stability that each child needs. As a mother, she lives together with her children, guides their development, and runs her household independently. She also recognises and respects each child's family background, cultural roots and religion.
There are currently eight SOS Children's Villages and three community social centres in South Africa, with each village consisting of between 10 and 15 houses, bringing to 944 the total number of children within the care of SOS in South Africa. SOS prefers to accept children under the age of eight years, but will not separate children older than this, who are part of a group of siblings. In addition to the eight villages, SOS also runs a Family Strengthening Programme, which works with children who are deprived of the care of their families. The organisation works with families and communities, specialising in providing care and support to orphans and vulnerable children, especially to the children who have lost the care of their parents and who face a significant risk of this happening to them. In particular, they give attention to those children within this group who are living in the most vulnerable circumstances, such as those within child-headed and grandparent-headed households.
SOS Children's Village relies heavily on donor support and funding to survive. Through public support SOS expects to be caring for children for the next 25-years and beyond. Make a donation, or sponsor one of the many SOS children in need for a year, and touch the lives of those with needs greater than your own.
